LAPD Detective Harry Bosch as we've never seen him before, in an exclusive eBook containing three compelling short stories
In SUICIDE RUN, the apparent suicide of a beautiful young starlet turns out to be much more sinister than it seems. In CIELO AZUL, Bosch is haunted by a long-ago closed case - the murder of a teenage girl who was never identified. As her killer sits on death row, Bosch tries one last time to get the answers he has sought for years. In ONE DOLLAR JACKPOT, Bosch works the murder of a professional poker player whose skills have made her more than one enemy.
Whether investigating a cold case or fresh blood, Bosch relentlessly pursues his quarry, always on the lookout for the "tell". In this first collection of Harry Bosch stories, Michael Connelly once again demonstrates that he is 'the greatest living American crime writer' (MIRROR).

I won't further elaborate on what the other reviewers have already stated about this not being up to Connelley's standards, though I agree. I might have been able to overlook that, after all nobody can be at the top of their game all the time, and well Bosch is still Bosch and always worth the read. However, I finished this book in under 30 minutes, not just one story...the book. These weren't short stories, they were barely longer than an average book description. What was really bad was that 1/4 of the entire book is a preview for "The Drop". I don't want to just read a couple of chapters of a book and then wait another two months to continue.Product details

Suicide Run Three Harry Bosch Stories Three Harry Bosch Stories eBook Michael Connelly Reviews
A quick filler by Mr. Connelly, if you will. These are 3 short stories. I enjoyed the first one. The other two are OK. But they end rather abruptly without fanfare. It's almost as if the reader says "Yeah, so?" No real twists, no climax; just the end. The stories aren't bad at all. The conclusions leave something to be desired. They make for a quickie read. But they certainly are not up to what one expects from Mr. Connelly.
Some readers seem to feel shortchanged, not realizing these were short stories. I don't understand why. The book's description states three Harry Bosch stories. It also states a length of 105 pages. That, in and of itself, tells you they are short stories.
What I did find irksome and selling the reader short was the version ends at a mere 72%. Reach that point and you're finished. Meaning over 25% is devoted to a preview of a full length novel. I'm sorry, that is shortchanging the reader. This happens somewhat frequently. But at less than 3/4 the way through and, without warning, your done. This reaches a new plateau in ending early.
I'm not sure I ever would have thought of Michael Connelly as a short story author. There's something about his books that almost seems to demand a long-form narrative the rich environmental details, the willingness to follow the often slow pace that police investigations really take, the gift for exploring his characters - all of these things seem to point toward novel length tales. And yet, this trio of short pieces are generally solid pieces of work, even if they don't quite come to life as well as his novels do. One part of that, I think, is their lack of contemporary setting; one of the things that makes Connelly's books so remarkable is the way they almost always seem to reflect their times, and these short stories feel more disposable, less anchored in time. That doesn't make the tales any less involving or the crime stories any less engaging, however. Whether it's a look at how the police investigate a possible suicide, a long-closed case that continues to haunt Harry Bosch, or a look at a clever way through an interrogation that's going nowhere, each of the stories is still involving and well-told, to say nothing of the way they all have that feeling of inside knowledge and awareness of how police work really unfolds. Suicide Run isn't going to be on the top of my Connelly list, but it's still enjoyable work from the great crime author, and it's a good way to spend a few hours, especially if you're just wanting a quick fix from one of the essential modern crime authors.
Michael Connelly is one of those mystery writers I perennially enjoy, but I tend to read him in batches rather than stay up with his book or two a year output. I don’t know why. I just like bingeing on the characters I guess. I binged recently, spent a day with Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller and had a good time. I’ve got more of Connelly’s books loaded into my iPad so I’ll get to those at some point.
Suicide Run is a collection of three long short stories or novellas, whichever you prefer. Reading each of them is like downing a slice of pizza. It’s really easy to reach for the next slice because it’s right there.
All three of them have different things to offer, so you can’t really compare them because they stand on their own merits.
“Suicide Run” is interesting, but really turned out to be too easy to figure out. However, it was good to see Harry in action with Jerry Edgars again, though it’s awfully easy not to like Edgars. The clues are all there, and it’s nice seeing Harry in the role of teacher to young Kiz Rider, who ends up playing an important role in Harry’s life later in his career.
The mystery isn’t too hard to solve, but as always, Connelly makes the trip interesting as Harry works the case detail by detail. I love how Connelly has a real view of Harry’s life and can slip back and forth in his character’s timeline.
“Cielo Azul” is a two-fer. We get to see Harry in action, as well as Terry McCaleb, who was the protagonist of Bloodwork and A Darkness More Than Night, both solid books. I enjoyed watching them together, seeing how they worked as well as how they were different.
The story structure in this one is really interesting because Connelly plays with time, sliding back and forth from the past to the present to get us to a chilling end that will leave readers anxious.
The poker player angle in “One Dollar Jackpot” is a nice set piece that shows a softer side of Harry to a degree, but also shows how conniving he can be once he knows a perpetrator’s mindset. At that point it’s always game one.
The three stories are great little reading snacks to enjoy at lunch or before you drift off to bed, and the ebook price puts them a one cool dollar apiece. You just can’t go wrong with this one.
I won't further elaborate on what the other reviewers have already stated about this not being up to Connelley's standards, though I agree. I might have been able to overlook that, after all nobody can be at the top of their game all the time, and well Bosch is still Bosch and always worth the read.
