How do you solve a murder when the victim comes back to life with no memory of recent events?

In the 22nd century, America struggles to rebuild after the second civil war. Democracy has been suspended while the reconstruction effort lifts the country out of the ruins of conflict. America's fate lies in the hands of a genetically-engineered soldier with the ability to move through time.

The Road to Hell deals with a futuristic world and the advent of limited time travel. It explores social issues such as the nature of trust and the conflict between loyalty and honesty.

and then in typical Cawdron style, you're thrown a curve ball.

In this case, several of them that thump you upside the head and make you think about "whose 'plan' are you following, exactly?" and answer this: is loyalty more important than the truth?

While there is plenty of adventure, sci-fi, mystery, intrigue, and action, there is also plenty of food for thought. I especially appreciated these excerpts:

"Satan has only one ally, the sincere. Those that mean to do well are the easiest to manipulate. Good intentions are not enough."

and

"No, you're wrong. Loyalty is a disease. Don't you see? Loyalty blinds us to reason. Loyalty is a substitute for morals. Loyalty avoids personal responsibility." Kane laughed, adding, "I'd never seen it before, but blind loyalty is cowardice, regardless of how courageous you are under fire."

This is a book you won't soon forget the message of...and won't want to quit reading once you've started.

The Road to Hell eBook Peter Cawdron Reviews

This is the second book by this author I've read. The first was Anomoly. I really like this authors style, his imagination and his intelligence. You don't have to be a sci-if fan to read (either book), but if you are you will enjoy as well. Read by Toni M.
This is an unusual book in that it combines great science fiction with a very traditional private detective story. This is the genre of old detective movies combined with Isaac Asimov. And,by golly, it works! If you like either (or both), you will definitely love this book.
Dawson has two books, Anomaly [ASINASIN Anomaly] being the first one I read, and I liked that so much I immediately went looking for more. Anomaly is a novella, while Out of Time is a full length novel and also a vey good read. It is an unusual book, sent in a (not too distant) future USA. The title refers to a couple of characters who enjoy limited travel through time, but most of the major players are very down to earth and engaging. Great action, great pacing, and very good development of the central and peripheral figures is what makes both books work.
Good start, I was hooked on the story, but I ended up having a hard time dealing with holes in the plot. It was either 25% longer originally and whittled down by an overactive editor for some reason-- perhaps to make it mor action-packed? Or it was rushed to completion. Either way, the last half was not nearly as good as the first. I was disappointed.
4.5 stars from me. This was a very good story, but not as "sciencey" as a lot of Cawdron's other work. A very action packed, quick paced story, "The Road to Hell" will have you deeply invested in the characters in no time. Harry was like a futuristic throwback to the noir detectives of old. Smooth, thoughtful, and gruffly charming, he made the story very enjoyable. This story was entertaining, with wall to wall gunfights and strategy, but not as cerebral as I am used to with this author. Very reminiscent of Minority Report or Blade Runner and well worth a read!
This is a book packed full of moral dilemmas. You will find that no one is completely good or completely bad. If you like books where the good guys always win...well here you have to decide for yourself who, if anyone, wears a white hat.

This is a story of struggles personal, professional and political in a time in the future where there has already been too much bloodshed and everyone wants peace. The question is, what price are you willing to pay for peace?

Peter Cawdron writes wonderful stories, but be ready to always put your thinking cap on, because you can't just sit back and enjoy the ride.....you have to take a stand.
Let's see a murder mystery which has complications, a vast conspiracy, commentary on a police state like government ala USSR where no religion is allowed, ideals on what a democratic government should be, nods to Harry Harrison, Philip K Dick. All this and more intelligent and interesting science fiction at it's best. The style is a throwback to classic science fiction styles which is the kind of science fiction I grew up with and enjoy. If you like Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat series or Dicks Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep then you will like this book. More Please with Harry and Rosie and Brains. I intend to read more of Cawdrons books.
